Still in Brunswick, GA - Let's drive up to Savannah

March 8-9, 2017

Miles Today:  0 NM
Total Miles: 298.6 NM

The weather hasn’t been cooperating.  In fact, except for a few spring-like days, there’s been a good deal of wind and cold temperatures.  As we are still learning how to handle the boat in winds, we prefer to wait for calmer days to travel.  Well, why not do some more sightseeing?  How about Savannah up the road about 80 miles?

We stayed at the Homewood Suites on the river, top floor room and only steps away from the art deco roof-top bar and swimming pool.  Since we arrived around 1pm, we opted for the guided trolley tour to get a good feel for the historic district and places we might want to spend more time visiting the next day.  It was a wonderful 2 days – cool and breezy, the sun shining.  Savannah did not disappoint.  She is a city full of history, grace and beauty, with a good deal of mystery and scandal thrown into the mix.  The pictures won’t do her justice.

A collection of old brick buildings on a bluff just above River Walk.  The center of commerce for Savannah's cotton brokers (factors) and home to the original Cotton Exchange

A series of iron and concrete walkways, known as Factors Walk, connected the buildings to the bluff.  The Factors would stand on the iron walkway while the wagons of cotton were pulled beneath and bid on each load.

Ramps leading from Bay Street down the bluff to River Street are paved with cobblestones, brought as ballast and abandoned on the riverbanks by departing sailing ships.

Fountains everywhere.  But did you know that Savannah has a St. Patrick's Day parade that is the second largest in the country?!  They celebrate St. Paddy's Day all week.  Many fountains are painted green just for the holiday celebration and flow with green water on March 17th.

What serendipity!  We were able to meet for dinner with Christina, Sebastian's amazing nanny for over 2 years when she lived in Colorado. Miss Tina has returned home to the South and currently lives in Savannah.  What a great evening!
