We have dreamed of doing the Great Loop since we read about
it in 2007. Jim has loved sailing in the
San Diego area since 1978 and often talked about buying our own sailboat and sailing to Hawaii. Georgia wasn’t keen on open water transits
and offered a compromise…a year or more of cruising the Great Loop of America
on a power boat.
We retired in March 2012 and were ready to embark on this
fantastic adventure. By the fall of
2013, we sold our San Diego home of 25 years and threw away, donated, or stored
our furniture and belongings. We started east to find the right boat and visit
family along the way.
Life is what happens when you are making plans. After almost 9 years of living in Australia, our son,
wife and our first grandchild/granddaughter moved back to the States – to San
Diego, of course! A grandson arrived
soon after. Our daughter and son-in-law
in Colorado announced the upcoming arrival of their first child – another
grandson! We were blessed and thrilled
and all thoughts about boats and long cruises were put on hold. We settled into the Boulder, CO area and
spent the next few years traveling back and forth between CA and CO, loving
every minute of being Mimi and Pa.
We've never owned a boat, never mind living aboard a power trawler and cruising thousands of miles! We are definitely ‘newbies' with so much to learn. There will be many mistakes, intimidating situations, weather and water challenges. We can only hope and pray we are up to it and, as we increase in confidence and skill, there will be an abundance of wonderful moments and memories to cherish for years to come.
Wow! Thanks for sharing. Yep, your dream could have passed you by with family, health issues BUT it hasn't. I am so happy for you. Stay safe. xoo, Patt from Chipsoft (a.k.a. Patrica "- ).
