On the Road (ICW) again! New Teakettle Creek

March 20, 2016

Miles Today:  40.8 NM
Total Miles:  339.4 NM

Pulling out of Brunswick Landing Marina - Bazinga's home since July 28, 2016.
We are finally back on the water.  We left our slip mid-morning, stopping by the fuel dock to pay our final bill and pump-out.   For two nights we will anchor rather than go to marinas - there are only a few marinas in the next 80 miles and those that exist are several miles off the ICW.

Our goal today was to arrive at The Little Mud River at near high tide to avoid the notorious shoaling and low water depths.  We got there an hour before high tide, stayed in the middle of the channel and rode thru the 1-mile pass with never less than 7-9’ of water below our keel.

We followed a large sailing catamaran for several miles and were passed by a larger trawler.  We were approaching the starboard (right) turn to our anchorage.  The catamaran was heading further north and there, across the marsh, was the larger boat already at anchor.  Because of the winding creeks in this area, it looks like the boat is sitting in the grass!

Far right, another boat already at our anchorage - looks like he's sitting in the grass
We turned into New Teakettle Creek and wound our way past the second bend in the creek.  By 4pm our anchor was set with 110’ of chain (remember – past that first yellow paint mark on the chain).  Except for the bigger Ocean yacht and a small sailboat anchored at the first bend near the entrance to the Creek, we were all alone in the Georgia marshes.  Haven’t seen stars so bright since we were in Wyoming years ago.  The wind came up during the night and the strong current had us facing the opposite direction, so we were up twice making sure our anchor held.

In the morning, while eating breakfast, we watched a shrimp boat slowly pass by on his way to the shrimp grounds out the north end of the creek.

Another milestone achieved - first night at anchor on Bazinga.

At anchor - nobody but us and the Georgia marshes

Dinner on 'the hook'
